It's almost too hot to think in Michigan today. Hot and sticky, humid and dusty. Impossible combinations of heat and humidity. The cattle are covered with stable flies and the horses sweat where they stand. We are very dry here too, almost, (but not quite) jealous of the rains in Texas. A two day soaker rain would make my dad the happiest man I know. I’m just glad I don’t have to be out in this heat working all day long. Too much northern European ancestry, I guess, because in weather like this I don’t think I was meant to live this far south! :)
The heat does give me an excuse to stay inside and get some reading and writing done. My summer reading has included, among other things, Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States; Underworld by Don DeLillo; The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera; and (my private indulgence) fantasy by George R.R. Martin and Patricia McKillip; and Rachel Ray’s 2,4,6,8 cookbook. So far, Underworld is completely over my head, but the others have me quite hypnotized, especially Kundera. And Rachel has recipes (especially Fake Baked Ziti) that are a great compliment to enthralling books.
So stay cool all you Michigan people and anyone else who’s sweaty!
